Mi deerest famili

          i hop u r as sadden as i wus wen i foud out that general lee had surrendered to grant at appomattox.  But we did burned down richmond when the Union wus about to take it. i know that wuznt wut we intended but it had to be don. thay told uz that we culd keep r horses and guns so i cot to keep Joli for sam. i hop that fred culd get on wit hiz lif like the other negroes they setted free. i am glad that i culd see y'all again. i wil be livin in about a week or so.

Hi Ma and Pa        We r not doin to wel on tha battle fild. We los tha battle of gettysburg  and en 2 dayz tha t otl numbr casulties los is 37000 . at 1 poent towads tha end of day 2 we wer doin ok til 1 regiment en maine cam attackt us wit bayonets.  I wus ther and it was relly scarie but i manige to escap. deer father i really really tired  and i am really luky to be alive n riting to you. we had just foght in the bloodiest battle of the civil war . i los a lot of my friends in it and im now sad. mr. lee is really really proud of us and i felt like his plans were stolen. well i really got to go now.... love yall your son, james brookes

1863 journal entry

Dear familie, It is July 14 as i am writting this. i just finishd the battle of Gettysburg which a terrible. We had so many casualties and we lost because general grant was in charg of da union. we didnt have tha high ground to shoot on so our acceracy asnt as good and we had to move more to find places to shoot. The battle last thre days. So many people died. We are losing the war now. I hope everything is goin good at home. I miss yall so much! Love, Fred Bloom Jr.
